I love food. I love taking pictures of food. But now I’ve learned to take BETTER pictures of food! It really is MAGIC when two major passions of your life come together.
Yes, you do need to style food and that in itself is a both an art and science, but it sure helps keep the ice cream firm while you futz around with your lighting.
Getting a good food shot in a location using natural light was incredibly challenging, only because the angle and intensity of the light changes so quick – you’ve got to plan ahead and get shooting as soon as the plate arrives.
Studio lighting can be controlled so much better, of course, and it does give you so many more options.
Next step for me – collect as many props as possible! I met a lovely group of food photographers who make it their mission to create backgrounds from wood found on the beach, feathers, rocks, old plates and dishes from garage sales – the possibilities are endless!
Here’s to more drool-worthy pixels!
